Hunan University of Technology is a comprehensive university with a history of more than 60 years. In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed from Zhuzhou Institute of Technology to Hunan University of Technology, and in the same year, Zhuzhou Normal University and Hunan Metallurgical Vocational and Technical College were merged.

The school's characteristic is packaging education. It is the first member unit accepted by the International Packaging Association (IAPRI) in China, the director unit of the Packaging Education Committee of China Packaging Federation, and the only vice-president unit of China Packaging Federation and China Packaging Technology Training Center in universities all over the country.
