Xihua university School was founded in 1960, then named Sichuan Agricultural Machinery College. It was one of the agricultural machinery undergraduate colleges established in seven regions of China in response to the call of Chairman Mao Zedong that "the fundamental way out for agriculture lies in mechanization". 1978, listed as a provincial key university by the Sichuan provincial government.
1983 was renamed Sichuan institute of technology. In 2003, Sichuan Institute of Technology and chengdu normal university merged to form xihua university. In 2008, Sichuan Institute of Economics and Management was integrated. Chengdu normal university was founded in 197 1, which is an earlier normal college in Sichuan province. The former Sichuan Institute of Economics and Management was founded in 1982.

The school has headquarters, Pengzhou Campus and Rennan Campus, with a campus area of nearly 3,000 mu. The school headquarters is located in Pidu District, Chengdu, a famous historical and cultural city in China, to the west of Wang Congdi Township, the hometown of Yang Xiong, and the Minjiang River winds through the campus from Dujiangyan. 1982, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the school as the first batch of bachelor's degree awarding units.
1985 The school began to recruit graduate students, 1990 The the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the school to grant master's degrees. On April 6, 2003, Sichuan University of Technology and chengdu normal university merged to form xihua university, a comprehensive university. On June 9th, 2008, 10, Sichuan Institute of Economics and Management (cadre) was integrated into xihua university, and its campus was renamed as xihua university Rennan Campus.
