Peking Union Medical College is the only national key medical university directly under the National Health and Wellness Commission of People's Republic of China (PRC). It implements an integrated management system with China Academy of Medical Sciences, and is a national medical science academic center and comprehensive scientific research institution in China. It is the first batch of pilot universities of excellent doctoral education and training program in China.

China is one of the first universities to build a world-class discipline. Peking Union Medical College was founded by the Rockefeller Foundation of the United States in 19 17, and opened an eight-year medical undergraduate course in 19 19. It is the first medical college in China to offer eight-year clinical medicine specialty and nursing undergraduate education.

This school is the first unit that has the right to award doctoral degrees and master's degrees. At present, there are 7 doctoral programs and 3 master programs in the first-level discipline. The State Council Academic Degrees Committee is the entrusted degree awarding unit, which independently examines the first-level disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees and the first-level disciplines authorized by master's degrees.

At present, there are 2 national key disciplines as first-level disciplines, 8 national key disciplines in two disciplines, 2 national key disciplines as third-level disciplines, and/kloc-0 national key cultivation disciplines.
