The School of Foreign Languages of Sichuan University was reorganized from the Foreign Languages Department of Sichuan University (founded in 1896), the Foreign Languages Department of Chengdu University of Science and Technology and the Foreign Languages Department of West China Medical University. The college now has five teaching units, including English Department, Japanese Department, Russian Department, French-German Department and Foreign Languages Department, as well as scientific research and foreign affairs service institutions such as language training center, foreign language examination center, American cultural research center, Canadian cultural research center, European research center, foreign language teaching research institute, multimedia teaching and modern educational technology research center.

The college has a strong faculty and a complete school-running system. The college has 1 doctoral program, which recruits doctoral students in the fields of British and American literature, British and American culture, translation and cross-cultural communication, linguistics and so on. There are three master majors in English language and literature, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, and Japanese language and literature, and master students in English, Japanese and Russian are enrolled. There are four undergraduate majors in English (arts and sciences), Japanese, Russian and French. The college also undertakes foreign language teaching tasks for arts, science, engineering, medicine, graduate students and undergraduates.
