Chen Zhenlian is a wise scholar artist. He studied a wide range of fields, including calligraphy, seal cutting, Chinese painting, Japanese calligraphy painting and related poetics and Ci. His theory and his calligraphy works complement each other, blend and penetrate each other, and reach a good virtuous circle. Zhang, a poet in the Song Dynasty, put forward the theory that "the charm lies in walking the heart", which has been skillfully developed in his calligraphy works. His pen and ink skills are quite skillful, especially the essentials of lifting, pressing, stopping and frustrating in brushwork. In his running script and cursive works, the coherence, superposition and passing of font lines, the turning point of linear expansion and contraction, and the elegance and compactness of linear quality are all carefully integrated by Chen Zhenlian, making them charming and radiant. His official script works not only have the brushwork of official script, but also incorporate the rules and characteristics of seal script and bamboo slips in Han Dynasty, which adds a bit of relaxed humor to the original simple official script and makes it more flexible to read.
