Guangdong University of Foreign Studies was formerly known as Guangzhou Foreign Studies Institute (1964 1 1), which was established in October and officially enrolled students in July,1965 (19701).

Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade and Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages were placed under the administration of Guangdong Province in September 1994 and September 1995 respectively by the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Cooperation and the State Education Commission. 1In May, 1995, the Guangdong Provincial People's Government merged the two universities to form Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

In June+10, 2008, Guangdong Provincial People's Government incorporated Guangdong Vocational College of Finance and Economics (called "Guangdong Finance and Taxation College" from April 2008 1996 to July 2006 1) into Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

The school is located in Guangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China and the economic center of South China. It has four campuses, covering a total area of 2,442 mu (including planning), of which Baiyun Mountain Campus is located at the northern foot of Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, covering an area of 939 mu.

The campus of University Town is located in Guangzhou University Town, covering an area of 1095 mu.
