Nantong University is not a first-class university. It is a comprehensive university jointly established by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Transport. The first batch of high-level universities in Jiangsu were built and cultivated to support universities. Ranked 1 14 by Chinese Academy of Management Sciences (evaluated by China University in 2020), and ranked 1 13 by ESI in China universities.

There are 16 universities in Jiangsu selected for the second round of double-class construction, but there is no Nantong University, so Nantong University is not a double-class university.

The first batch of bachelor's and master's degree awarding units, doctor's degree awarding units, advanced collectives for graduates' employment in ordinary colleges and universities, advanced units for research and practice of entrepreneurship education in colleges and universities, the first batch of innovative and entrepreneurial demonstration universities in Jiangsu Province, the first batch of advanced universities in Jiangsu Province, the advanced unit for national spiritual civilization construction, and the typical spiritual birthplace of "Mo Wensui" in national spiritual civilization construction.
