Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has a strong team of excellent teachers, world-class advanced experimental facilities and equipment, and a global academic book data query system. All 430 professors from 35 countries around the world have doctoral degrees, of which 75% are from world-class research universities, including Harvard, Berkeley, California, Princeton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale, Stanford, Cornell, Colombia, Cambridge, Oxford, Toronto, British Columbia and the University of Western Ontario.
Professor Wang Ning from the Department of Physics was awarded the 2006 Asian Outstanding Achievement Award by the Chinese Physical Society. In 2000, Professor Wang successfully observed the thinnest single-walled carbon nanotubes in the world, with a diameter of only 0.4 nm, which made great contributions to the research of carbon nanotubes. This research achievement was recommended by academicians of China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering as one of the top ten scientific and technological achievements in the world that year. Later, together with my colleague Professor Tang Zikang, we discovered that carbon nanotubes are superconducting.
Professor Han Liqiang from the Department of Chemistry cooperated with the famous German Bayer Company to successfully develop a new antimalarial drug Artemisia annua sulfone with high curative effect and low cost. This research was selected as the cover theme of Applied Chemistry, an authoritative academic journal in the global chemistry field, on March 20th, 2006.
Professor Ye Yuru, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, won the "L 'Oré al UNESCO World Outstanding Female Scientist Achievement Award" in March 2004, becoming the first female scientist in Hong Kong and the second female scientist in China.
Professor Zhang from the Department of Biology invented a molecular biosensor to monitor the process of cell apoptosis.
The thesis of Professor Li Zhongyi, director of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management, was selected as the best paper in 2005 by the special issue of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. In 2006, Professor Li was elected as the vice president of Asia by the Institute of Industrial Engineers, which showed his leading position in the field of industrial engineering.
Dr. Zhao Ruheng, an associate professor of department of mechanical engineering who led the research on indoor air quality in Hong Kong, was awarded the Ralph G Nevins Prize in Physiology and Human Environment by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers. Previously, Professor Yu and Professor Yu were awarded the title of Academician by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Professor Yu was also awarded the title of Academician by the British Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Professor Zhang Musheng, director of the Department of Civil Engineering, was elected as an academician by the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering in recognition of his achievements in industrial and timber engineering. Professor Deng Hanzhong, a classmate, was selected as a "hall-level technical pioneer" by the American Offshore Energy Center and the "honorary member" with the highest honor by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The waste restriction barrier technology successfully developed by Professor Lao Minci of this department has made great contributions to the work of controlling underground pollution, so it won the "J. James Croes Medal" of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2004, which is the first Asian to win this honor in 15 years. The following year, the International Society of Environmental Geophysics awarded the old professor the "2005 Fang Xiaoyang Research Award", which once again affirmed her outstanding achievements in scientific research.
Professor Cao Xiren from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering was appointed as the chairman of the jury of the Control System Branch of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Up to now, 1 1 professors in the department have become academicians of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Professor Khalid Ben Letaief, head of the department, was invited to join the board of directors of the Communication Branch of the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers to help handle the affairs of the branch.
Professor Zhang Qian from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is the winner of the "Best Young Researcher Award in Asia-Pacific Region in 2005" awarded by the Communication Branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and one of the winners of the "World Youth Innovation Award in 2004" awarded by MIT Science and Technology Review. The award she won is enough to prove that she is in the field of computer science. Professor Lin Fangzhen, a fellow student, was awarded the "Autumn Tea Excellent Researcher Award" in recognition of his outstanding research achievements in the field of artificial intelligence.
