By running the service software on the computer, it allows users to dial-up through telephone modems or the Internet using terminal programs, and perform functions such as downloading data or programs, uploading data, reading news and exchanging messages with other users. Many BBS are amateur maintained by webmasters (usually called SYSOP-SYStem OPerator) and also provide paid services.
