How to draw peony in traditional Chinese painting
Peony is a kind of flower with a big flower head. It has many varieties, rich colors, delicate and touching, and is deeply loved by Chinese people. It has the reputation of "national beauty and fragrance" and is often praised as "national flower". Peony is a unique flower in China and the most common theme in China's flower-and-bird paintings. When painting peony, you should pay attention to separating it from peony. Peony and Paeonia lactiflora are not obviously different in flower head shape, but their quality is different: Peony is woody, Paeonia lactiflora is perennial herb, and there are also differences in leaf shape. Painting is to show their characteristics.

A. flower head painting:

Dip a medium-sized Beijing pen (both wool and wolf hair brushes are doubled) into a big red color, adjust it on the palette to make the color penetrate into the root of the pen, then dip the nib into a rouge color, and after a little blending, stipple on the screen. The traditional method of counting peonies is one by one, and the whole flower head consists of thick to light points. After the flower head is finished, when the color is not dry, adjust the junction between the flower heart and the petals with the color of rouge ink, so that the petal handover is clear and vivid. When the color is 70% to 80% dry, use azurite to color the stamens, and then use Garcinia powder to color the stamens. When you point stamens, you should point them according to the organizational structure of the three strokes. Don't point them at will, there is no organization.

B. Peony painting:

The painting of flowers is similar to that of flower heads, except that flowers have calyx and stipules. When painting, we must consider the whole flower, so that the calyx and stipules become an organic whole of the flower head.

C. Peony leaf painting:

Dip a medium-sized pen in floral green and gamboge light green, adjust the color on the palette, dip the pen tip in ink, stir slightly to make the ink color blend with the primary color on the pen, and draw the leaves on the screen with the side edges. Draw the leaves in groups, and draw them in groups of three strokes in regular places, so that the drawn leaves will not be messy. The charm of freehand brushwork is not only manifested in vivid brushstrokes and lively images, but also in moist colors and dripping ink, so you should master the skills of using water and color when painting leaves. When you start writing, the ink should be saturated and the writing should be quick. Draw a leaf with one color, so that the dry and wet shades will naturally change from the beginning to the end of the pen. After the stippling of leaf color ink is completed, when it is 70% to 80% dry, outline the veins with heavier ink (color). Hooking the pulse is an important step, which determines the turning back and organizational structure of the blade, so we should adjust it from the overall structure of the picture, not just from the local consideration.

D. peony branch painting:

In general, compared with flower heads and leaves, branches account for a small proportion in the picture, but their importance must not be underestimated when depicting, let alone depicted at will. Only by understanding their structural laws and growth characteristics can we show the different textures of trunk and young leaves in painting.
