At the beginning of the establishment of the Chemistry Teaching and Research Section, there were only 1 1 teachers and 3 experimenters, including Professor Ye, Associate Professor Xiao Jusong and lecturers, and the rest were young teachers who just graduated from universities, mainly undertaking the general chemistry teaching tasks of freshmen in the whole school. At that time, Yu Jia was still a barren hill with rugged farmland and wasteland, and the teaching building was still under construction. The only bungalows are classrooms, laboratories and offices. There are only six chemistry laboratories, four of which are for students to do experiments, and each room can only accommodate 15 students to do experiments. There are only 20 swing scales in 1 preparation room and 1 balance room. There is no sink in the laboratory, so students can only wash instruments in the corridor. That winter, the lowest temperature in Wuhan reached-14 degrees Celsius. Not only is the water pipe frozen and cracked, but even the prepared solution is too cold to open the bottle cap. It is under such difficult conditions that all teaching experiments are carried out smoothly due to the efforts of all teachers and experimenters.

With the development of the school, the chemistry teaching and research section has also developed accordingly. The chemistry laboratory moved to the east second floor, and later moved to the west end of the south first floor. The laboratory area is gradually increasing, and the instruments and equipment are increasing day by day. From the late 1950s to the Cultural Revolution, a group of young college graduates were transferred or transferred from foreign schools and related majors in our school for several years in succession to enrich the teaching staff of the Chemistry Teaching and Research Section. These young teachers are full of energy and enthusiasm. With the guidance and help of old teachers such as Ye, Jiang, Zhu Huinan and Shi, most of them will become the backbone of the chemistry department in the future. Therefore, the courses offered by the Chemistry Teaching and Research Section have developed from a single general chemistry to inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and related chemical specialized courses and elective courses.

According to the needs of its own development, the Chemistry Teaching and Research Section actively organizes teachers to carry out scientific research by making full use of the favorable conditions of teaching task set mainly in one semester. After more than 20 years' unremitting efforts, we have not only made some influential achievements and significantly improved the academic level of teachers, but also gradually formed a number of stable scientific research directions, such as metal corrosion and protection, bio-inorganic chemistry, special polymer materials, heterogeneous catalysis, and biological trace element analysis, which will be the scientific research direction of chemistry department in the future. The two teacher classes enrolled students in 1977 and 1979 respectively, which laid a good foundation for the establishment of the chemistry department. 198 1 year, the chemistry teaching and research section merged with the physics teaching and research section to form the physics and chemistry department. Under the leadership of Zhu Huinan and Hou Huarong at that time, all the faculty members made a lot of preparations for the establishment of the Department of Chemistry.
