The Department of Architecture of Tongji University originated from the Department of Civil Engineering of Tongji University, the Department of Architecture of St. John's University, the Department of Architecture of Zhijiang University and the Department of Architecture of Hangzhou Art College. It was formed by the merger of these departments during the adjustment of national colleges and universities in 1952. Since the establishment of the Department, architects have always advocated rationality, pragmatism and innovation, and kept calm observation, independent thinking, inclusiveness and magnanimity in the face of architectural thoughts in different periods at home and abroad, which made Tongji Architectural Department have unique academic character and tradition. From 65438 to 0986, it developed into an architecture and urban planning college composed of four departments: architecture department, urban planning department, art design department, landscape science and tourism management department.
The Department of Architecture enrolls students nationwide, and has two undergraduate majors: Architecture (five-year program) and Historic Building Protection Engineering (four-year program). The latter is a new branch of architecture, and it is a new specialty initiated by domestic architecture department. The whole department enrolls about 120 undergraduates majoring in architecture and 25 undergraduates majoring in historical building protection engineering every year. The proportion of international students is about 10%. Every year, 20 graduate students/kloc-0 and 30 doctoral students are enrolled.
