The school is a university jointly founded by Anhui Provincial People's Government, China People and China Ministry of Education. It was selected as the first batch of four universities supported by the "Construction Project of High-level Universities with Local Characteristics" and "Award Project of High-level Universities" in the revitalization plan of higher education in Anhui Province.

The school, formerly known as Anhui University, was founded in Anqing, 1928. 1946 was renamed as National Anhui University, and officially named as Anhui Normal University with the approval of the State Council (Comrade Guo Moruo wrote the name of the school). In 2005, Wuhu Normal University was merged into Anhui Normal University.

The school has 18 colleges, including College of Arts, School of Marxism, School of Law, school of economics and management, Conservatory of Music, Academy of Fine Arts, School of History and Society, School of Education Science, School of Chemistry and Materials Science, School of Geography and Tourism, School of Life Sciences, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, and School of Continuing Education. It also owns Wanjiang College of Anhui Normal University, attached middle school, attached primary school and kindergarten.
