The historical origin of University of Science and Technology Beijing can be traced back to 1895, the first mining and metallurgy discipline in China's modern history. 1952 school was jointly founded by the departments of mining and metallurgy of six famous universities in China, such as Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University) and Tsinghua University, and was named Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Industry, which was the first institution of higher learning in iron and steel industry established in New China.

At present, the school has developed into a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education focusing on engineering, science, management, literature, economics and law.
