The School of Sports Science and Engineering of East China University of Science and Technology has distinctive features in the construction of high-level sports teams, and has formed a sports team construction system featuring table tennis, with six high-level sports teams recognized by the Ministry of Education, including table tennis, basketball, track and field, tennis, martial arts and shooting. In the mid-1980s, the Department of Physical Education set up a sports team featuring table tennis. 1990 when China university student sports association was founded, east China university of science and technology was established as the venue unit of table tennis association, a branch of China university student sports association. At the same time, the school has also been established as the vice-chairman unit of China University Sports Association and the chairman unit of Shanghai University Sports Association. 1992 East China University of Science and Technology teamed up for the first time to represent China college students in the 9th College Table Tennis Championships held in Lyon, France, and the women's team won many championships. Since then, East China University of Science and Technology has teamed up to represent China university students in the biennial World University Table Tennis Championships and won the world championship in various events.

In 2000, the 13th World University Table Tennis Championships independently hosted by China was held in East China University of Science and Technology. The school table tennis team won 6 gold medals and 5 gold medals on behalf of China university students except the men's team in the 5th World University Table Tennis Championships in 2004. 1997, when the ITTF resumed the China Table Tennis Super League, the women's team of East China University of Science and Technology participated in the China Table Tennis Super League for the first time as a college student team and won the sixth place as the only amateur team. In this process, the school table tennis team has also trained a large number of outstanding athletes. Such as Tieyana, Gao Jun, Qiao, and famous domestic athletes Yu Jingwei, Jiao, Cui, etc. In 2006, two women's teams from the Table Tennis Club of East China University of Science and Technology both rushed into the 2007 China Table Tennis Super League, creating a miracle in the history of the Table Tennis Super League.

The basketball team of East China University of Science and Technology has also achieved excellent results. Since 1996, the school basketball team, martial arts team, track and field team, tennis team and shooting team have also achieved good results in major domestic competitions. Since 1999, all high-level athletes from the Department of Physical Education have entered the major of international trade in business schools, and since 2000, special classes have been arranged for high-level athletes, which are uniformly arranged and managed by the Department of Physical Education.

The innovation of sports scientific research is unique. The College of Sports Science and Engineering has continuously explored the development of disciplines, established the Institute of Sports Economic Theory, and opened a master's degree program in sports humanities and sociology, focusing on sports economy and sports industry management, aiming at cultivating high-level research and analysis, policy consultation, management and teaching and research talents for government sports management departments, universities, sports research institutions, clubs, sports industry and other related industrial management institutions. Combining the characteristics of science and engineering with the advantages in the material industry, a sports materials research and application promotion center was established, with China Sports Materials and Equipment as the technology, service and promotion platform, mainly for the development, research and testing of sports equipment and materials. With the integration of Industry-University-Research, the Department of Physical Education established the first research and development center of new sports materials in China, marking the further development of East China University of Science and Technology as a national sports material research and development base.
