Since the establishment of 1998 metastable materials preparation technology and science laboratory, it has possessed a certain scale and a high level of scientific research ability after eight years of construction. The laboratory focuses on the preparation technology and science of metastable materials, based on basic and applied basic research, and pays attention to the extension of application development. It has formed five mature scientific research directions: non-equilibrium phase transformation and metastable phase interception, design, synthesis and physical properties of new metastable materials, amorphous and nanocrystalline, steel materials containing metastable phases, and preparation and processing technology basis of metastable materials.

From June 5438 to February 2005, the Ministry of Science and Technology approved the laboratory to be included in the national key laboratory construction plan. In May this year, the laboratory construction plan passed the demonstration of the expert group organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and officially became the national key laboratory.

Relying on Yanshan University, the State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Preparation Technology and Science was established in early 1998, and operated as a provincial key laboratory in February/999. On July 28th, 2006, it was officially approved as a national key laboratory by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The laboratory mainly relies on the first-class discipline of materials science and engineering of Yanshan University, and integrates with the first-class disciplines of mechanical engineering and condensed matter physics.
