Brief introduction of the author

Zhu Guangqian (189710/October14-1986 March 6), a native of Tongcheng, Anhui Province, is a famous aesthete, literary theorist, educator and translator.

In the 11th year of the Republic of China (1922), he graduated from the Faculty of Arts of Hong Kong University. In the 14th year of the Republic of China (1925), he studied at the University of Edinburgh, England, devoted himself to the study and research of literature, psychology and philosophy, and later obtained a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Strasbourg, France. After returning to China for 22 years (1933), he successively served as a professor in Peking University, Sichuan University and Wuhan University.

In 35 years (1946), he taught aesthetics and western literature in Peking University. 1March 6, 986, Zhu Guangqian passed away. Zhu Guangqian is a first-class professor in Peking University, an academician of China Academy of Social Sciences, a member of the Joint Committee of China Literature and Art Circles, and the executive director of China Foreign Literature Society.

Zhu Guangqian mainly edited Psychology of Literature and Art, Psychology of Tragedy, On Beauty, On Poetry, On Literature, Croce's Philosophical Review, History of Western Aesthetics, Essays on Aesthetic Review, On Beauty, Selected Works of Aesthetics, etc. And translated Goethe's Dialogues, Plato's Literary Dialogues and Lessing's laocoon.

In order to facilitate the study of Marxism-Leninism, he began to teach himself Russian at the age of 60. Even at the age of 80, he wrote Letters on the United States and Selected Works of Aesthetics, and translated Vico's New Science, the first social science work in modern times.
