The University was formed by the merger of the former Lampeter College of the University of Wales (founded in 1822), Trinity College of Carmarthen (founded in 1848) and the former University of Swansea City (founded in 1853) according to the Royal Charter of Lampeter College (granted by King George IV himself).

In 20 17, the former University of Wales (founded in 1893) was merged into Trinity St. David's University in Wales.
