Located in Beijing, North China Electric Power University (hereinafter referred to as Huadian) is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is established by the board of directors of State Grid Corporation, China Electric Power Enterprise Federation and other 12 super-large power groups and the Ministry of Education. It is a national "double-class" "21/Project" and "985 Project".

It is one of the first universities in the Ministry of Education to implement the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan", a university founded by the "School-enterprise Alliance for Excellent Engineer Training in Electric Power Industry", and an energy science university led by the Chinese side of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
