School of Energy and Power Engineering is one of the predecessor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and one of the schools (departments) when Huazhong Institute of Technology was founded. Its power engineering and engineering thermophysics are the first batch of first-class national key disciplines, and there are six two disciplines: thermal engineering, engineering thermophysics, power machinery and engineering, fluid machinery and engineering, refrigeration and cryogenic engineering, and chemical process machinery. After the key construction of "2 1 1" project and "985" project, a discipline system supported by the state key laboratory of coal burning, the national R&D center of clean and low-carbon power generation technology for energy and power plants, the research center of energy conservation and emission reduction engineering of the Ministry of Education and the national practice teaching base of thermal energy and power engineering has been formed. It is the Chinese leading unit of the Clean Coal Technology Alliance of China-US Clean Energy Research Center, and also the China-Europe Institute of Clean and Renewable Energy and Wuhan New Energy Research Institute.
This major focuses on training senior specialized technical personnel and management personnel who combine energy and power engineering knowledge with modern information technology. Graduates can engage in research, teaching, design, development, management and marketing of energy and power engineering, automation and related aspects in the fields of electric power, refrigeration and low temperature, heating and air conditioning, automobiles, ships, fluid machinery, electronic information, metallurgy, chemical industry, railways and medicine. Over the years, many well-known enterprises at home and abroad have set up special scholarships for outstanding students in the college. Every year, about 50% of undergraduate graduates continue to pursue postgraduate studies (about 20% of them are graduate students who are exempt from exams), and about 5% of outstanding undergraduate graduates are recommended to Tsinghua, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Sciences and other universities and research institutes to pursue master's and doctoral degrees without exams. The college has established close ties with dozens of large state-owned backbone enterprises, well-known joint ventures and private enterprises, and its graduates have been recognized by the industry. The employment rate of students has exceeded 95% for many years.
