As early as the early 20th century, William and Mary College easily came up with the idea of establishing an independent university off campus. The top leaders who put forward this proposal include supervisors.
Board member Robert M Hughes and President J.A.C. Chandler of William and Mary College 18 (J.A.C. Chandler 1872- 1934).
From 65438 to 0924, Joseph Healy, as the project director of William and Mary College in Norfolk, began to organize the teaching of branch schools and the search for school sites. With the joint efforts of Healy, Hughes, Chandler and A·H· Foreman, a two-year branch school was established in Norfolk, Virginia on March 1930.
On September 3 of the same year, H.Edgar Timmerman became the first director of the school. On September 12, William and Mary College in Norfolk welcomed the first batch of 206 students, including boys 125 and girls/8 1. The original teaching building of the school is the abandoned teaching building of Lachmont School on Hampton Avenue.
After the establishment of William and Mary College in Norfolk, it was referred to as "Headquarters" for short. The school mainly provides two-year undergraduate education for students who cannot receive higher education for various reasons. The tuition fee for freshmen in this school is 50 dollars.
193 1- 1969
193 1 autumn, Virginia Tech began to offer corresponding courses in Norfolk campus, further increasing the number of courses offered by the branch school, enabling the school to carry out the teaching of normal and engineering disciplines.
The school was founded during the Great Depression, but under the protection of Roosevelt's New Deal, Norfolk received a federal grant. The Public Works Administration provides funds for the school to build the administrative building and foreman's site. 1932, Lewis Warrington Webb joined the school as an engineering tutor, and was later known as the "father of the old dominion". Weber has been a tutor at school for ten years; 1942, deputy manager of the school. From 1940 to 1944, he was also appointed as the chairman of the school's national defense and war training program. Weber made great contributions to the victory of the United States in World War II by conducting national defense and military training courses. Even when most young students set foot on the battlefield, the school still maintained normal operation through the project, and attracted many women to learn wartime skills such as aircraft repair and conscription.
From 65438 to 0946, Weber became the dean of William and Mary College in Norfolk. At this time, Weber began to conceive the prospect of running a school independently. Soon, the educational system was changed from two years to four years.
From 65438 to 0962, Norfolk successfully became independent from William and Mary College. 1962 February 16, Virginia legislature passed a bill to dissolve the relationship between William and Mary College and Norfolk Campus, and then Governor albo S Harrison Jr. (1907- 1995) signed the bill. Later, Norfolk was renamed Old Dominion College. Weber served as dean of the college from 1962 to 1969. 1962 On May 27th, Frank Batten became the first principal of the school, and he held this position until 1970.
1964, with the completion of new dormitory buildings-Rogers Building and Gresham Building, the school accepted the first batch of students.
During 1969, when James L. Bouguer was president, Oudaoming College was renamed Oudaoming University. During Bouguer's tenure, the school set up the first batch of doctoral programs. At the same time, the school has established a school management system composed of faculty, administrators and students. Bug also restored ROTC, which was established in 1948, but was terminated after the outbreak of the Korean War.
1970 till now
In the1970s, under the leadership of President Alfred B. Rollins Jr., Oumingdao University began to cooperate with some local institutions (such as NASA, US Navy, East Virginia Medical College and Norfolk State University). Rollins' move aims to promote Oumingdao University to become the leading school in Hampton area. Taking this opportunity, universities have successfully won more state and federal funding, thus improving the quality of university development in an all-round way. At the same time, Oudaoming University also introduced the honorary curriculum system for the first time. 197 1, the school set up a school police force and hired police officers to patrol the campus.
From 65438 to 0977, after the Virginia Campus Police Act passed the legislative process, the school helped train local and campus police. At the same time, the school police who originally belonged to the school have fully obtained the police qualification and have the right to enforce the law in and around the school.
In recent years, European University has been awarded the title of research university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Promotion of Teaching in the United States.
