Unit 8 Daydreaming "Bob, are you daydreaming again? If you kill time like this, you will accomplish nothing! Can't you find something useful to do? " Many young people have heard similar words from their fathers. Until recently, this hostile attitude towards daydreaming was quite common. Daydreaming is regarded as an unhealthy behavior that wastes time or evades real life and duties. However, now some people have a brand-new view of daydreaming. Some people think that daydreaming may be good for health. People's attitude towards daydreaming is changing, which is similar to the change of people's attitude towards dreaming at night. People always think that dreaming at night interferes with the rest they need. Later, researchers tried to interrupt sleepers' dreams, but they learned that if they were not allowed to dream, they would not benefit from rest. They become nervous, irritable, unable to concentrate, and their mental health is temporarily impaired. To recover, you have to let them dream. Now, researchers have found that daydreaming is also important for mental health. They told us that daydreaming is a good way to have a rest. But their benefits are not limited to this. Some psychologists have carried out experiments and come to some surprising conclusions. Dr Joan T. Freburg has come to the conclusion that daydreaming will promote intellectual development. She said: "daydreaming can also make people pay more attention, prolong the time of concentration and enhance their ability to get along with others. In an experiment with school children, researchers found that daydreaming can make children pay more attention to details, and they feel happier and cooperate better. Another researcher reported that daydreaming seems to be able to improve self-control and creativity. But this is only part of the story. Perhaps the most striking thing about daydreaming is that it can shape our future life according to our wishes. Industrialist Henry J. Kaiser believes that his success is largely due to the active use of daydreams. He insisted that "you can imagine your future". Florence nightingale dreams of becoming a nurse. Thomas Edison imagined himself as an inventor when he was young. For these famous successful people, their daydreams seem to have come true. Dr Harry Emerson Fosdick believes that we often become what we think we are. He gave us a piece of advice, "Set up an image for yourself in your mind, ............................................................................................................................................................. If you really consider being defeated, you can't succeed in it alone. Think about your victory, it will play an inestimable role in success. If you don't set up an image for yourself, you will go with the flow ... "The experience of some athletes seems to confirm this view. For example, John You Seils, a former pole vaulter, used daydreaming skills before every sports meeting. He thinks he won. He realistically thinks he crossed the bar at a certain height. He imagined all the details in his mind. He imagined the stadium and the audience, and even the smell of grass and earth. He said that this exercise of imagination left traces of memory in his mind, which will help him to play in future exercises. Why does the success you imagine in your mind contribute to the actual success? Dr. Maxwell Morcz, a surgeon and writer, said, "Your nervous system can't distinguish between imaginary experiences and real experiences. In both cases, he will mechanically respond to the information you give him. " He believes that purposeful daydreaming can build new "memories" in the mind. Those positive memories can improve people's self-image, and self-image has an important influence on a person's behavior and achievements. Can you shape your future with purposeful daydreaming? Why not try? The following are recommended practices for those who believe in creative daydreaming; Choose a time when you can be undisturbed. Close your eyes and let your imagination soar more freely. Many people find that it works best when they imagine themselves sitting in front of a big screen. They project their imagination on this screen. Now think about yourself as vividly as possible according to your own wishes. Remember to imagine what you want to achieve as if you have already achieved it. Imagine the details one by one. See every detail clearly. Carve them firmly in your memory. It is said that the memory trace formed in this way will affect your life and help you achieve your goal. Of course, daydreaming can't replace hard work. If you want to achieve something in sports, you need to do a lot of practice. You must work hard to improve your skills. If you want to succeed in your studies, you can't neglect your studies. Daydreaming alone can't turn wishes into reality. But if combined with more common self-improvement methods, it may play a key role. It may decide whether it is only good at something or a champion. If what the researchers say is true, life without fantasy and daydreaming will not be as rich and beneficial as real life. So they suggest setting aside a few minutes for daydreaming every day. Doing so can promote your physical and mental health. Spend ten to fifteen minutes on holiday in the imaginary kingdom every day, and you may add a lot of excitement and joy to your life. Who knows, you may see your daydream come true.
