The school has 13 specialty selected as the national first-class undergraduate specialty construction point. 20 16 As one of the two universities selected by the Ministry of Education, the national certification of engineering specialty of the school has been observed and inspected by international experts from washington accord, supporting China to formally join the washington accord International Engineering Education Organization.

The school originated from Harbin Institute of Technology and was founded in 1920. 1958 in response to the call of the state, Harbin Institute of Technology moved the major related to heavy machinery to Fulaerji District, Qiqihar City, an important industrial town, and established the Fulaerji Branch of Harbin Institute of Technology, which was originally named as Fulaerji Heavy Machinery College of Harbin Institute of Technology and later renamed as Fulaerji Heavy Machinery College of Harbin Institute of Technology.
1960 Independent School, named Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, became a university directly under the former Ministry of Machinery Industry. 1978 was identified as a national key institution of higher learning. From 1985 to 1997, the whole school moved to Qinhuangdao.
1997 was renamed Yanshan university with the approval of the former state education commission. 1998 was transferred to Hebei Province by the former Ministry of Machinery Industry, which was jointly built by the central and local governments and mainly managed by Hebei Province. In 2000, Hebei Light Industry Management School was merged into Yanshan University.
