The school was founded in 1924. After private Qingdao University, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University and Shandong University, it developed into Shandong Ocean University in 1959 and was identified as one of the national key comprehensive universities in 1960. 1988 was renamed Qingdao Ocean University.

The school has three campuses: Laoshan Campus, Yushan Campus and Fushan Campus, covering an area of more than 2,400 mu, and is building the West Coast Campus. College 2 1, Basic Teaching Center 1. At present, there are more than 27,000 full-time students, including undergraduate students15,000, graduate students 9,000, doctoral students 2,000 and foreign students 700.
There are 3,698 faculty members, including full-time teachers 1884, doctoral supervisors 505, senior professional technicians 693, deputy senior professional technicians 892, academicians of China Academy of Sciences 7 and China Academy of Engineering 9.
Wang Meng, a famous writer, is a consultant and honorary dean of the School of Literature and Journalism. Wang Shuguang, former director of the State Oceanic Administration, is a school consultant and honorary president of the Institute of Ocean Development; Qian Ren, an internationally renowned physicist, is consultant, distinguished professor and dean of Xingyuan College; 14 famous writers, including Nobel Prize in Literature winner Mo Yan, were hired as "resident writers".
