Xiamen University is better called Amoy University. It came from the past and has passed away.
Personally, I think Xiamen University is more appropriate. Combined with personal feelings, there are three main reasons:

First, the school email address, domain name and other convenient names. A university has a domain name with the suffix edu, which is usually the school pinyin abbreviation plus edu.cn. Xiamen University is xmu.edu.cn, of course. When you see this URL suffix, you will naturally know that this is the website of Xiamen University. If it is changed to Amoy University, how to get the domain name? A Mu? Or AU? It's not as straightforward as XMU. In the same way, the mailbox is the same. There is a school mailbox with xmu.edu as the suffix. As a Xiamen University person, this is a very proud thing. If the three letters of xmu have obvious meanings, how can they feel this way? After all, people who know that Amoy is from Xiamen are much less than Xiamen people.

The second is relative unity. The English names of many universities in China are based on Pinyin. Even those named after English pronunciation, such as Tsinghua Peking University, are at least close to Pinyin, which can let people know that this is Tsinghua and Beijing. Although Xiamen is written in Minnan dialect as Amoy, its popularity is too low (for China people), and it is difficult for many people to compare with Xiamen. It is probably not conducive to the publicity of Xiamen University.

Third, in terms of fluency, it is much more refreshing to call Xiamen. When introducing myself in English class, I always blurt out, "I'm from Xiamen University." Even the English channel broadcast by the school is Xiamen (it is not connected with the university when introducing the city). Nobody said Tao. Foreigners should also know that Xiamen is amoy. Since it has been called for so long, why mention another unfamiliar name?

Of course, the above is just my personal opinion, welcome to discuss!
