Since 1987, the discipline of materials science and engineering has successively established national, provincial and ministerial research and teaching bases, such as the State Key Laboratory of New Material Composite Technology, the State Key Laboratory of Silicate Building Materials, the State Key Industrial Experimental Base of Optical Fiber Sensing Materials and Sensing Technology, the ministerial-level Open Laboratory of Materials Research and Testing Center, the Hubei Biomaterial Engineering Research Center and the Hubei Fuel Cell Key Laboratory.

The existing laboratory area of materials discipline is 3 1000 m2, and there are more than 0/0000 sets of instruments and equipment. The experimental teaching center of materials science and engineering has been established, which can be used for teaching instruments and equipment with a total value of more than 50 million yuan and a reference room area of 2 10M2.

The State Key Laboratory of New Material Composite Technology has a building area of 1.8 million square meters, and has a number of advanced materials synthesis and processing equipment and modern materials structure analysis, characterization and performance testing equipment. Main research direction: 1. Develop a new generation of material compounding and processing technology, especially low-dimensional compounding technology, including nano-compounding technology and thin film compounding technology; 2. Develop new structural and functional materials based on new material compounding and processing technology, especially key new materials, information functional materials and new energy materials for national defense construction; 3. Basic research and design of materials, especially the composite principle and design of multi-component and multi-scale materials. The laboratory is open at home and abroad, with 56 regular researchers and 25 visiting researchers.

The National Key Industrial Experimental Base of Optical Fiber Sensing Materials and Sensing Technology was approved by the State Planning Commission in 1990, and it was the only national key industrial experimental base of optical fiber sensing technology in 1997 with a total investment of 28 million yuan. The industrial test line is established with three products of optical fiber liquid level, temperature and valve position, and industrial tests are carried out, with an annual output of 1000 sets. Main research fields: (1) research on special optical fibers and new sensitive materials; (2) Research on optical fiber intelligent materials, structures and applications; (3) Research on new fiber grating sensor and its application; (4) Research on optical fiber sensing network technology.

The Key Laboratory of Silicate Materials Engineering was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education in August 2000. Its main research directions are: basic theory of silicate materials engineering, production technology and equipment of silicate materials, resource utilization of low-grade raw fuel and solid waste; New varieties and technologies of silicate materials; Evaluation and standard of new silicate materials. It has a batch of advanced research and testing equipment for silicate materials, including 54 regular researchers (including 26 professors) and 34 visiting researchers (including overseas 17).

The Open Laboratory of Materials Research and Testing Center was established in 1987. It is a modern research, analysis and testing institution, focusing on the chemical composition, microstructure and properties of materials. The center has a building area of 6,000 square meters, 46 staff, more than 40 kinds of large-scale precision analysis and testing instruments, and all kinds of physical property testing instruments are complete, which can meet the analysis and testing of composition, structure and physical properties of various materials.
