The shipbuilding department of Tongji University Institute of Technology merged into the shipbuilding department of Jiaotong University, and merged with the shipbuilding department of Dalian Institute of Technology on 1956 to form Shanghai Shipbuilding Institute, using the original site of Jiaotong University. Later, this part became the foundation of Shanghai Jiaotong University.

The Department of Electromechanical Engineering of Tongji Institute of Technology was assigned to Jiaotong University. Later, Jiaotong University was separated and Xi Jiaotong University was assigned to this department.

Tongji University Law School was first merged into Fudan University. Later, this part participated in the preparation of East China University of Political Science and Law, and later developed into the present East China University of Political Science and Law. A part of the Department of Chemistry of Tongji University and a part of Fudan University formed East China Institute of Chemical Technology, which was then the original campus of Tongji University.

At that time, the universities involved in the preparation were Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Datong University, Soochow University, Jiangnan University, Tongji University, St. John's University, Hujiang University and East China Normal University. Later, this university developed into East China University of Science and Technology.
