The school was formerly the Forestry Department of Central University (founded in 1902) and the Forestry Department of Jinling University (founded in 19 10), and Nanjing Forestry College was merged in 1952, which was one of the only three forestry colleges in China at that time. 1955 Huazhong agricultural college (formed by the merger of Wuhan university, Nanchang university and Hubei agricultural college) was merged with the forestry department, and 1972 was renamed Nanjing forestry industry institute. 1983 restored the name of Nanjing Forestry College, and 1985 changed its name to Nanjing Forestry University.
As of February 2023, the school has three campuses, covering an area of 1024438+05 mu, with more than 2.38 million paper documents and 4.3 million e-books. There are 2 1 college (department) and 69 undergraduate majors.

By February 2023, the school had established more than 50 scientific and technological innovation platforms at or above the provincial level, such as the State Key Laboratory of Forest Genetics and Breeding, the National Engineering Research Center for Low-carbon and High-efficiency Utilization of Forest Biomass, the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Mechanical and Electrical Products Packaging in biomass materials, the Collaborative Innovation Center set up by the Southern Modern Forestry Department, and the International Innovation Platform for Forest Products Chemistry and Materials (set up by the National Forestry and Grassland Bureau and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province).
