Depart from national mall, cross the Arlington Memorial Bridge, go to George Washington Memorial Park, and enjoy the panoramic view of Georgetown and other places in DC. From there, drive to route 66, drive about100km to the former Royal Town, and follow the signs to Shenandoah National Park and expressway, the skyline. In this way, you can reach the northernmost park entrance and the skyline highway, with a total length of 175 km, spanning the whole park.
The skyline highway ranks first among the most scenic highway routes in the United States. You can see the beautiful river valley scenery at almost every corner, and there are many parking spots along the way, which is suitable for epic selfies or picnics.
There are more than 800 kilometers of hiking routes in the park, including the famous Appalachian Trail about 160 kilometers, running through Maine and Georgia. Old Rag is the most popular and dangerous hiking route in the park, with a total length of 14.5km, full of challenges, but at the end of the zigzag climbing route, it has beautiful scenery. Less challenging hiking routes, such as the Marys Rock route, can be accessed from the entrance of Thornton Gap (from expressway No.211). Along this 6-kilometer circular hiking route, you can see all the scenery of the whole valley.
