The Historical Evolution of Songqing Gymnasium
The100000 yuan (shares of Zhongxing Coal Mine) donated by the revolutionaries of 1911 to build Jianghan University was transferred to Wuhan University to build a gymnasium. "Songqing Gymnasium" is the official name of the old gymnasium of Wuhan University.

Songqing Gymnasium started in June 1935 and was completed in July 1936. The curator is about 35.05 meters, with a width of about 2 1.34 meters and a building area of 2,748 square meters. Shanghai Liuhe Company won the bid for construction. This was the highest standard university gymnasium in China at that time. Now it is a national key cultural relic.

The gymnasium is surrounded by cloisters, reinforced concrete columns, and the roof is a three-hinged arch steel structure. Long-span space, unique gable, roof shape and green glazed tile change with three hinged arches, forming baroque wheel rudder gable and triple eaves on the rest of the mountain. This was a very advanced building technology in the west at that time. There are Chinese double eaves in the grandstand-dripping water from three eaves, and there is also a bucket arch in the museum, which is only used by the court or high-standard temples. It not only shows the architectural technology of modern new long-span structures, but also maintains and develops the characteristics of traditional buildings in China. There is a stand inside and an observation deck outside. Kells originally wanted to build a swimming pool in front of the museum, but it was not adopted. At the same time, it was planned to build the First Righteousness Memorial Hall of the Revolution of 1911 in the museum, but it was not realized because of the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The roof is covered with green glazed tiles, and the height difference of dense eaves is used for lighting and ventilation. The side wall frame structure and gables are baroque style, which is a typical combination of Chinese and western architecture.

1938, the provisional national congress of the Kuomintang was held here, elected Chiang Kai-shek as the president, and called on the military and civilians of the whole country to unite against Japan. 1947, the June 1st massacre memorial hall was held here.
