Li Ka-shing's speech at the graduation ceremony of Shantou University 2010;

Dear Chairman Song Hai, distinguished leaders, directors, teachers, guests, parents and students,

Today, on behalf of the school board, I am very pleased to welcome you to Linshou University and share the joy of your graduates. After years of hard work, you have completed an important stage in your life. First of all, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the students. Congratulations!

Students, do you know? Like you, I am born in the 1980s, so I want to interact with you today: How many students here think that their years in Shantou University can lay the foundation for your future success?

How many students think they have abundant spirit and strength, strong physique, and all the important elements necessary to realize their ambitions and goals?

How many students want to drag out an ignoble existence, but they can climb the ideal peak and create extraordinary achievements?

Which students believe that they still have a lot of room for study?

Do any students know what obstacles discourage you?

Now let's enter a more difficult question: How many students are sure that they will always stick to their principles, refuse to deceive themselves and others, and refuse to take shortcuts as the right path?

Dear students, as we all know, dreaming big doesn't mean much: rushing to success without a plan will make you physically and mentally exhausted. Life should be determined, and we should pursue our dreams with earnest efforts. If you pursue personal happiness and satisfaction, you may not find the answer in the textbook. Only when you actively practice your inner behavior can meaningful experiences drive away your inner emptiness and let you enjoy the rich taste of life.

How much confidence do you have in yourself? Do you have indomitable spirit and know how to face up to and overcome the setbacks and obstacles that will appear constantly in the process of growth? Are you willing to believe in yourself? Don't be afraid to be tested when facing the choice? You survive in adversity, can you cultivate stronger vitality in training? Do you know the significance of taking responsibility, and do you have a fair and just heart to pursue progress for yourself and society? Do you know how to cherish the blessings of choice, have the patience to be a mentor and friend of the younger generation, have dedication, be the mainstay of the country and the nation, and seek and live eternal value between heaven and earth?

The following is my last question to you today: Are you grateful? Have you been moved by the memories that your parents and teachers always supported you when you were growing up without complaining?

Dear students, when preparing for today's speech, my colleagues suggested that it is best to quote classics here to strengthen my feeling of being knowledgeable. I don't agree with this view. The inspiration of predecessors is of course important, but how to make philosophy last forever requires your thinking and refining. If you can try your best to live a rich, happy and dignified life on the road of responsibility, who will you be in the future? You're great. You're a classic. Today you are proud of Shantou University, and tomorrow Shantou University will be proud of you.

Thank you all.
