The college was founded in 1757, formerly known as St. Petersburg Art College, and was renamed Imperial Art College when Catherine II. At present, the main building of the college was completed in 1789, which is located on the north side of University Riverside Road on the south side of Vasily Island, north of neva river, and there is a famous sphinx by the river. After 1944, it was renamed Lie Bin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. 199 1 year later, it was renamed St. Petersburg Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

In August 2020, China joined the Sino-Russian (Shandong) Alliance for International Cooperation in Education.
