Tianjin University of Science and Technology was founded in 1958 (formerly Tianjin Institute of Light Industry). It is one of the first four light industry undergraduate colleges established in China. Formerly affiliated to the former Ministry of Light Industry of China, it is now a public full-time ordinary university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Tianjin, mainly managed by Tianjin.
It is a multidisciplinary university that focuses on engineering, with the coordinated development of engineering, science, literature, economics, management and law. It is a university with rapid development and the most emerging industry in Tianjin.

Tianjin University of Science and Technology was once one of the four short-listed universities in Tianjin (Nankai University, Tianjin University of Science and Technology and Tianjin Normal University), and "Food Science and Engineering" ranked fourth in the country with A++ score, ranking behind Jiangnan University, South China University of Technology and China Agricultural University, and it is one of the best universities in China at present.
The major of packaging engineering (including printing engineering) ranks first in the competitiveness of undergraduate education in China University in the evaluation report of China University and Discipline (2010-201).
In addition, in terms of the efficiency of teachers and students' scientific research and the efficiency of university teachers, Tianjin University ranks third, second only to Tianjin University and Nankai University.
