Brooklyn College, formerly known as Hunter College of City University of New York (Women's College) and City University of new york, Brooklyn College (Men's College), was established by new york Higher Education Commission on 1930. After the merger of the two branches, it was finally determined as Brooklyn College of City University of new york, becoming the first public coeducational liberal arts university in new york.
1932, the architect Randolph Evans drew up a plan for his employer to build a campus on a large piece of land in Midwood, Brooklyn. He planned the whole campus in the style of George dynasty. The campus is surrounded by the central square of the building and the tower library building in the east corner. At that time, Dr. William A. Boylan, the principal, was very much in favor of this plan, and bought the land for building the campus at the price of $65,438+$6,000. Campus construction began at 1935. Attending the groundbreaking ceremony were then Mayor Fei Aolei Lo laguardia and Brooklyn Mayor Raymond ingersoll. 1936, then President franklin roosevelt came to Brooklyn College to lay the foundation stone for the gymnasium. The Roosevelt Building, Bojland Building and ingersoll Building in Brooklyn Campus are named after President Roosevelt, President Bojland and District Governor ingersoll. 1975, the new campus of Midwood became the only campus of Brooklyn College.
Now, the east side of Brooklyn College's campus is still the same as it used to be. The campus also serves Brooklyn as a performing arts center and four theaters, including the famous george gershwin Theatre (to be hosted by Leonard &; Claire Toto Center for the Performing Arts). This reconstruction is the biggest change in the campus. Other changes include the demolition of the plaza building, which was built by the famous Uruguayan architect Rafael Vi? Instead, it was the West Square Center designed and built by oly.
As one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States, Brooklyn College is often used as a location for movies and TV series, including the current hit TV series Gossip Girl.
