Southwest University of Political Science and Law is located in Chongqing, a famous historical and cultural city and the only municipality directly under the central government in the central and western regions. It is the earliest institution of higher learning in politics and law in New China.

The school has three campuses: Shapingba Campus, Yubei Campus and Baoshenghu Campus, covering an area of more than 3,000 mu. Among them, Yubei Campus is an undergraduate and postgraduate education and teaching center, Shapingba Campus is a base for continuing education and cadre training, and Baoshenghu Campus is a base for scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The school now has five departments: Law Department, Literature and Art Department, Political Education Department, Economic Management Department and New Discipline Department, including Civil and Commercial Law School (Intellectual Property College), Economic Law School (Ecological Law School), Law School, Administrative Law School (Supervision Law School), International Law School and Artificial Intelligence Law School (Applied Law School).

There are 13 colleges, including Criminal Investigation College (National Security College), Business School (Supervision and Audit College), Economics College, Foreign Languages College, School of Journalism and Communication (Media Integration College), School of Politics and Public Administration, and Marxist College, with human rights research institute, judicial expertise center and local legislative research institute.
