The comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education originated from the Self-improvement School founded by Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Huguang, in 1893, and was the first modern college in China. Sun Yat-sen University in Wuchang was founded in 1924 and renamed as National Wuhan University in 1928. It has a long history and rich connotations.
