China news agency, Hong Kong, September 2-The University of Hong Kong announced on the 2 nd that the Li Ka-shing Medical College of the University of Hong Kong was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in July to establish the "Partner Laboratory of the State Key Laboratory of Biomedical Technology" and establish a strategic alliance with the State Key Laboratory of Medical Biotechnology of Nanjing University to carry out basic research and related treatment research on diabetes and cardiovascular diseases caused by obesity.

This is also the fifth State Key Laboratory of the University of Hong Kong, with Xu Aimin, a professor of internal medicine at Li Ka-shing Medical College of the University of Hong Kong, as the laboratory director.

Xu Aimin said that at present, there are about 93 million people with diabetes in the mainland, and more than 654.38+0.4 billion people are at high risk of pre-diabetes. Diabetes is not only the main risk factor of cardiovascular disease, but also closely related to the incidence of various malignant tumors, which has caused a heavy medical and economic burden to the mainland.

Xu Aimin pointed out that the establishment of research platform and the development of innovative drugs for diabetes and related chronic diseases are one of the strategic priorities of the 12th Five-Year Plan, and he believed that the laboratory would help to promote related research and bring important results.

The laboratory is located in Li Ka-shing Medical College of HKU. It is led by the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy. The research team of the University of Hong Kong is close to 80 people. The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology also formed an interdisciplinary research team to participate in the research work.

According to the introduction of the University of Hong Kong, the laboratory has cooperated with more than a dozen top research institutes and hospitals in China to conduct long-term research on metabolism and cardiovascular diseases, and established a basic and clinical research network of adipokines and new hormones with world-renowned laboratories.

The research team hopes that the cooperative laboratory can become an important platform for domestic and foreign researchers to strengthen mutual cooperation and academic exchanges, train young researchers, and support the development and clinical practice of the pharmaceutical industry in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

According to reports, there are about 260 national key laboratories approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, each with different research priorities.
