Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in America. 1636, 10 year1October 28th, the colonial Council of Massachusetts Bay passed a resolution and decided to build an institution of higher learning after Cambridge University in England. Originally named "New College" or "Newton College", this school became the first higher education institution in the United States.
March 1639, 13 In order to thank and commemorate Pastor john harvard's generous contribution in the early days of the college, the Massachusetts Bay Colonial Council passed a resolution to rename the school Harvard College. 1780 Massachusetts promulgated a new constitution, and Harvard College was expanded and renamed Harvard University.
