Is applying for a green card in an American university the same as applying for a foreign student?
Difference 1: visa

Holding a US green card, you can freely enter and leave the United States without complicated visa application procedures.

The visa for studying in the United States is a non-immigrant visa, and the visa officer adopts the "presumption of guilt" and assumes that there is an immigration tendency. If you come from a high-risk area, the application difficulty will further increase. The key is to provide sufficient and credible materials to American immigration officials to prove their purpose of studying abroad. In addition, we should also consider English. If the TOEFL score is not good and the spoken English is average, it will be difficult to pass the interview.

Difference 2: Tuition fee

As far as university tuition is concerned, the annual tuition, living expenses, room and board, round-trip air tickets, etc. It costs about 250,000 yuan to study in the United States, and at least 6,543.8+0,000 yuan for four years. The tuition fees of local students are only one-third of those of international students, and international students cannot apply for financial aid. State universities or community colleges will charge high tuition fees, fees and credits to international students.

Difference 3: student loan

Green card holders with 18 or above can apply for various student loans in the year when they get their green cards. For example, excellent private schools in the United States can apply for loans, with university tuition of $40,000 and postgraduate tuition of $60,000-$70,000, while students studying in the United States cannot.

Difference 4: Go to a top prestigious school.

To enter the top universities in the United States, like eight Ivy League universities, the average annual admission rate is only 9.2%. Generally speaking, the number of international students enrolled by prestigious schools is about 5%~ 10% of the total enrollment each year, and it is open to the whole world. Take Harvard University as an example. In the past seven years, only seven China students have been admitted each year. 90%~95% of the places are reserved for permanent residents or citizens, and about 2000 local students are admitted every year.

Difference 5: Scholarship

For international students who are interested in applying for American university scholarships, they can only compete with outstanding people from all over the world for very limited scholarship places open to foreigners. But for people with American green cards, the scope of scholarships is far from what a foreigner can apply for.

Difference 6: Part-time job

Because international students have no identity, there are many restrictions on working. First of all, they can only apply for part-time jobs on campus. Most of these part-time jobs are unskilled manual labor, and the number is limited, which is difficult for most international students to obtain. Secondly, only students who have obtained the above positions and social numbers are eligible to take part-time jobs outside the school. Local students have no identity problems, few work restrictions, and can freely choose their workplace. The number of off-campus part-time jobs is large, the remuneration is high and the work content is rich.

Difference 7: Medical expenses

The high medical expenses of international students can only be borne by commercial insurance or at their own expense. Most of the medical expenses of local students are borne by social insurance, so parents can accompany them at any time and get more care and guidance in their study and life.

Difference 8: Employment

There are no restrictions for American green card holders to work in the United States, and international students are in extremely unequal competition with American students when they look for jobs after graduating from college. The United States government has specialized agencies to find jobs for Americans free of charge.

Difference 9: Stay and work in America.

After the international students finish their studies in the United States, the first thing to be solved is the identity problem. American F- 1 Students have one-year OptionalPractical Training (OPT) qualification after graduation. If students do not apply for OPT within 60 days after graduation, they must leave the United States. After getting the OPT visa, find a job, and then the employer will come forward to change the student status of F- 1 to the employment status of H-1B. You still need to draw lots to apply for H1B. According to statistics, the success rate of foreign students in China is less than 10%. With the H- 1B visa, the applicant can apply for a green card while working.
