Guangdong University of Technology, located in Guangzhou, was formed by the merger of Guangdong Institute of Technology, South China Institute of Architecture (East Campus) and Guangdong Institute of Machinery on 1995. The provincial key universities, high-level universities and high-level universities of science and engineering in Guangdong Province, which are mainly built by the Guangdong provincial government, are comprehensive research universities with industry-oriented and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. Selected into the national "11plan", new engineering research and practice projects, excellent engineer education and training plan, and "Made in China 2025" national pilot demonstration base.

Five disciplines, including mechanical engineering, material science and engineering, control science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, and design science, were selected as the key construction disciplines of the "first-class, short-board and strong characteristics" promotion plan in Guangdong Province. There are seven first-class doctoral programs in mechanical engineering, management science and engineering, material science and engineering, control science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, information and communication engineering and environmental science and engineering.
