history
The first piece of land to expand Berkeley was bought by California Private College 1866. However, due to lack of funds, the college was merged by the State College of Agriculture, Mining and Machinery, and the University of California was established on March 23rd, 1868, with Durant as the first president.
The mid-20th century was the golden age of physics, chemistry and biology in Berkeley. With the invention of the particle cyclotron by physicist Ernest O. Lawrence, researchers in this school discovered many elements heavier than uranium. Polonium and californium are named in memory of this university, while technetium and californium are named after each other. (Seaborgium) is named after Lawrence and Glenn T. Seeburg.
During World War II, the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley contracted the US military's atomic bomb research and development project.
Berkeley was famous for its students' protests against the American government during the Vietnam War. 1964 The freedom of speech movement launched in Berkeley changed the political and moral views of a generation.
Today, most students are not as keen on politics as their seniors, but there are still a few radical members who continue to maintain their traditions.
