1922, 10, 10. On October 23rd, Shanghai University was founded in cooperation with the state, and 1927 was forcibly closed by the Kuomintang authorities. 1983, Shanghai Municipal People's Government reopened Shanghai University on the basis of Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University, East China Normal University Instrument and Electronics Branch, Shanghai University of Science and Technology Branch, Shanghai Machinery Institute Light Industry Branch and Shanghai Fine Arts School.

1On May 27th, 994, Shanghai University for Science and Technology, Shanghai University and Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology merged to form a new Shanghai University.
