The Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Transport signed an agreement to jointly build Shanghai Maritime University. It was selected into the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the scholarship receiving institution of the China Municipal Government for overseas students, and the first batch of demonstration universities in Shanghai to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education.
The school was formerly known as 1909, and in the late Qing Dynasty, the postal department was the ship administration department of Shanghai Higher Technical School (Nanyang College), which initiated the higher maritime education in China. Wusong Merchant Shipping School was founded in 19 12 and renamed Wusong Merchant Shipping College in 1933.
1959 The Ministry of Communications established Shanghai Maritime College in Shanghai. In 2004, it was renamed Shanghai Maritime University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In order to better serve the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center and the development of the national shipping industry, according to the adjustment plan of the layout structure of Shanghai universities, the main body of Shanghai Maritime University was moved to Lingang New City in 2008.
