KIT, a research university of Helmholtz Association, was founded 50 years after the establishment of Karlsruhe Research Center and 18 1 year after the establishment of Karlsruhe University. In 2006, these two institutions won outstanding initiatives from the federal and state governments.
The core scheme for the two universities to successfully apply for "excellent universities" is to merge into the unique Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in German higher education and research fields.
