Xinjiang Finance College is the only financial institution of higher learning in Xinjiang and one of the five key universities in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The school, formerly known as the Xinjiang Provincial People's Government Cadre School, was founded in 1950 and upgraded to Xinjiang Institute of Finance and Economics in 1959. In 2000, the former Xinjiang Institute of Finance and Economics, Xinjiang Economic Management Cadre College, Xinjiang Finance School and Xinjiang Taxation School merged to form a new Xinjiang Institute of Finance and Economics.
