Do you think work is a burden or an opportunity? Are you the kind of person who tries to save energy, or the kind of person who feels satisfied with spending energy? Why do some people like to complain about their work? Find the answers to these questions in the following passage.

Why do people work?

Leonard sayles

Work brings us more happiness and satisfaction than most of us realize. We are all used to thinking that work provides the material basis of life-goods and services that make our modern civilization possible. But we seldom realize to what extent work provides more intangible but more important mental health, which can determine a full life and an empty life.

Historically, work has been associated with slavery, sin and punishment. On our own days, we are used to hearing traditional complaints: "I can't wait for my holiday", "I wish I could stay at home today", "My boss is not nice to me" and "I have too much work to do, but I don't have enough time to do it." In this context, it may be surprising that not only psychologists but also other behavioral scientists have begun to accept the positive contribution of work to personal happiness and sense of accomplishment. For most people, work is not just a necessity; This is the focus of their lives, the source of their identity and creativity.

Work is not a punishment or burden, but an opportunity to realize one's potential. Many psychiatrists who lead mental health clinics have observed its therapeutic effect. Many patients who felt depressed in the clinic regained their self-confidence after finding gainful jobs and lost some, if not all, of the most serious symptoms. More and more institutions dealing with mental health problems are setting up workshops so that those who are too ill to find jobs in "outside" industries can work there, and at the same time, make every effort to arrange "real" jobs for those who are healthy enough to work outside.

or vice versa, Dallas to the auditorium For many people, unemployment is harmful to their health. Retirement often brings many questions around "what should I do". Problems, even if there may be no economic concerns. Many people often have headaches and other diseases when they have no work to do on weekends and have to take care of themselves. People have noticed that unemployment not only brings economic pressure, but also brings huge psychological problems, and many people will deteriorate rapidly once they lose their jobs.

But why? Why is work an important source of human satisfaction? A large part of the answer lies in the sense of pride inspired by work and completed activities.

Pride in achievement

Human beings are eager for a sense of accomplishment and can do things with their hands, minds and will. Each of us wants to feel that we have the ability to do something meaningful, which is a compliment to our inner ability.

This is most easily seen in the craftsman, who affectionately makes some cheap materials into a useful or beautiful or both. You can see a carpenter or bricklayer standing by and admiring the products of his personal skills.

However, even though it is not obvious that the final product is entirely attributed to a person's skills, researchers have found that employees will find pride in their achievements. Our own research in the hospital shows that even the cleaning and laundry staff are proud of helping patients treat diseases in their own way-so they have made great achievements.

We are often misled by complaints about difficult jobs; Deep down, most people think that their ability to conquer hard work is a sign of their unique personality. Complaining is only part of the job. After all, how can you know who you are except that you can prove that your mind has the ability to control your limbs, hands and language? To a large extent, you are what you can do.

Some people are deceived and think that people like to store energy, rest and save themselves as much as possible. On the contrary. What is satisfactory is the energy consumption.

Just look at such an employee, he/she has to deal with countless others, because his/her work is at a central point in the communication network: a salesman at a busy counter, a stockbroker on the phone, and a customer representative. They will tell you how much skill and experience you need to answer countless questions and deal with various roles every hour of the day. Not everyone can interact so persistently for a long time, but those who do will be proud of their unique ability, which greatly promotes the operation of the organization.

But work is more than just achievement and pride in being competent, because most of the work is done in the "outside world" through others except a few craftsmen and artists.

Team spirit

Perhaps there is an example to illustrate this point:

I remember seeing six people in a chair factory. Their job is to bend several steel plates and then connect them, so that they can get a folding chair. Although there are ten or twelve such "teams" working together, one team is famous for its perfect coordination and lightning-fast efforts. Men know they're great. They will work continuously for twenty or thirty minutes, then have a rest and show themselves, onlookers and other groups what superb technology and self-control are and become the best in the factory.

When I talked with them, everyone expressed great pride in being a member of the fastest and best team. This feeling of belonging to an accomplished team is a unique satisfaction in the working world.

Another word about working group satisfaction. Different from other aspects of life, interpersonal relationships at work are often simpler, less complicated and less emotional. This is not to say that there is no debate and jealousy, but, on the whole, behavioral research reveals that interpersonal relationships at work are easier, perhaps because they are more regular and predictable, so they are easier to adapt to than sporadic, tense and irregular relationships in the community. The working group also gently put pressure on its members to learn how to adapt to each other in order to eliminate the "rough edge" because people know that they have to do something with and through others every day.

In addition to teams and working groups, there are organizations, whether companies, hospitals or universities. As part of a well-coordinated and successful team, the same pride comes from being part of a larger group. Working for a company that is considered to be the best in the community can provide employees with status and confidence. They usually have good reason to think that others value them more, even envy them, and they are more capable than the average person because they are connected with a "winner" and a prestigious institution. In fact, we are bathed in the glory reflected by this institution, and we seek various ways to maintain our membership so that others can know and recognize our good luck.
