How to Choose Textbooks for German Beginners

Many beginners will ask a question, which textbook should I choose to learn German? In fact, textbooks are not good or bad. The only difference is which textbook suits you better. So I suggest that friends who want to learn German, your first task is not to choose textbooks, but to know yourself first.

When I give my students the first class, I always ask them two questions first. 1 is why you learn German, and 2 is how far you want to learn German. Through these two questions, I can determine what textbooks to choose for students and even choose different teaching methods. Let me give some real examples to briefly explain why these two issues are so important.

Students are college students. He wants to study in Germany after graduation and pass the Telford exam (goal 16). The textbook I chose for my classmate A is "New German Intensive Reading Course", because the grammar of this textbook is very detailed, and all the exercises are close to the Telford test questions. I will strengthen the training of China students' weak listening and speaking ability in class.

Student B is an employee of a company. Recently the company will send him to Germany for training. Learning German is to better integrate into German life, and a conversation in daily life is enough. The textbook I chose for student B is "All over Germany", supplemented by the introduction of German customs in class, to train students to express their wishes with the simplest vocabulary and grammar.

C is a graduating college student. Learning German is interested in German. I hope it will help me find a job in the future. I just need to master the most basic German. The textbook I recommended to him is the newly compiled College German. In class, students will pay more attention to practicing their spoken English, because spoken English may be the most direct way to show their German level in the future.

So after knowing your motivation and goals, you can choose the teaching materials that suit you. General training schools will use one or two sets of teaching materials to develop courses, that is, students have little room to choose. At this time, students must be careful, in case they use textbooks that are not suitable for them, they will do a lot of useless work. For example, if I ask student B to take a new intensive German course, he will certainly be overwhelmed by the complicated grammar of German, and finally he will remember many words, all of which are university canteens, open classes, libraries and so on. When he arrived in Germany, he found that he couldn't speak a word of German and couldn't use a word. It would be strange not to scold me as a teacher.

Here I will introduce some commonly used German learning materials in China according to my own experience, hoping to give some help to German beginners.

1. Contemporary College German

The advantage is that the grammar is very fine and the content is relatively new, which is suitable for those who are ready to learn German for a long time, but not for fast learning. Because the textbook specially designed for German majors mainly focuses on campus life, it is difficult for ordinary people to learn by themselves without the teacher's explanation, and German learners who have entered the society are not suitable for this textbook.

Applicable people: German major; German learners with a certain foundation (as an auxiliary teaching material)

2. New University German

Special teaching materials for college students with German as a second foreign language. The content of this textbook is very simple and easy for beginners to learn. Suitable for all kinds of people to study by themselves. However, it should be noted that because the pronunciation part of this textbook is very simple and there are few exercises, it is suggested that the pronunciation part should not be taught by yourself. There are also workbooks. It's best to buy workbooks together. It is very suitable for people who just want to know and apply German, but don't plan to go abroad or study German in depth.

Applicable people: college students who use German as a second language; People interested in German.

3. "All Germany"

The introduction of teaching materials means a brand-new teaching concept. Illustrated pictures and texts are the biggest characteristics of this book, which allows students to learn about Germany and even German-speaking countries while learning German. In addition, this book attaches great importance to the all-round development of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and there are many topics of divergent thinking. The disadvantage is that for China students, there are too few phonetic parts and too few grammatical explanations. It is suggested that students who study this set of textbooks must have another grammar book, and it is best to think of other methods or find other textbooks to practice pronunciation.

For self-taught beginners, you will find that this book is difficult to get started from the beginning, and your listening comprehension is almost incomprehensible. Besides, there are few explanations in Chinese, and you have only a little knowledge of grammar. Therefore, it is suggested that beginners who study this textbook in universities must attend training courses or learn from teachers.

Applicable people: people who plan to work or live in Germany in the future; People who have a basic knowledge of German teach themselves.

4. New German intensive course

Edited by the Preparatory Department for Studying in Germany of Tongji University, the most suitable teaching materials for various training courses are almost the necessary teaching materials for studying in Germany now. The content is very good, so I won't go into details. The disadvantage is that it is not suitable for people who have no foundation to study by themselves.

Applicable people: college students who are going to study in Germany; Get ready for Calder Ford; It is also good to have some knowledge of German to assist in learning.

5. New standard German intensive course

Another imported textbook is difficult to learn by itself and its grammar is simple. Without the teacher's explanation and summary, it is difficult for students to straighten out grammar. It is best to buy matching exercises and grammar books. The advantage is a strong sense of the times, which can exercise students' thinking and oral ability. If you teach yourself, I suggest you choose this textbook after you have a certain foundation in German, but it is not recommended for beginners.
