The predecessor of Northwest Normal University is the Urban Normal College founded in 1902.

1898, the Qing government formulated the articles of association of Jingshi School, which stipulated that Jingshi School was divided into ordinary schools and specialized schools. After the 1898 coup, the Boxer Rebellion and Eight-Nation Alliance's occupation of Beijing, Capital University was repeatedly destroyed because of its closure.
