The discipline of Automation Department covers seven two disciplines in the first-class discipline of control science and engineering. They all have the right to confer doctorates and master's degrees. There is a postdoctoral mobile station for control science and engineering. At present, it has more than ten laboratories or research centers, including the National CIMS Engineering Research Center, the Key Laboratory of Bioinformatics of the Ministry of Education, and the Intelligent Information Processing Sub-center of the Intelligent Technology and Systems Laboratory of the State Key Laboratory.

The main research directions include: system identification theory, advanced control technology, intelligent optimization theory, quantum control, bioinformatics, network information security, networked system research, intelligent signal processing of communication and radar system, modern integrated manufacturing system research, intelligent transportation system, smart home technology research, modern automotive electronics technology research, modern detection technology research, complexity research, modern logistics and e-commerce. Service, simulation and virtual manufacturing, fault diagnosis and prediction of process industry, fault-tolerant control of complex dynamic systems, enterprise information engineering, research and application of streaming media, analysis and synthesis of complex systems, modeling, optimization and control of manufacturing process. Over the years, the department of automation has undertaken many major national scientific research projects, including high-tech projects such as the 973 and 863 plans. It has undertaken more than 500 national key scientific and technological projects, national natural science foundation projects and large-scale horizontal projects. Great achievements have been made in scientific research and technical application.

Due to the further development of information acquisition technology, the continuous cheap computing resources, the increasing popularity of high-speed communication networks, and the cross-integration of different disciplines, automation disciplines are facing new major development opportunities. The scientific research work of the department of automation will increase efforts in interdisciplinary and knowledge integration.
