More than 80 freshmen were selected from more than 2,000 candidates in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Wuhan. They are the first batch of drama school students enrolled after the founding of New China, with a schooling of eight years. Before the formal enrollment of the Theatre Academy, there were pioneers, including Wang Rongzeng (formerly Rong Chunshe), Li Ke, Su Yi, Su Zhi, Jin Tong, Zhao Zhongru, Zhao Huisheng, Yang Shuqin and Xu Ruoying.

Among the first batch of students, in addition to the students based on the original Siwei Theatre Academy, there are also students who merged from the original Swimming Club and Northeast Theatre Academy, and later added students.
